As the kids would say “but is it, really?”!
‘What is reality’ might be a better place to begin the discussion. According to Chasidic thought and indeed Jewish teachings, G-d is reality.
All of the material world is, only because it is energized by Hashem. The fact that we don’t see that vividly is a function of our perception or really lack thereof. Our perception is stilted because we are not tuned to the G-dly frequency.
Try this on for size. If you are reading self help books, watching self help shows or documentaries, engaged in self help work, then your engagements with others and the world around you will be tuned to self help.
If you are reading trashy novels, watching violent shows, listening to heavy metal rock, your perception of the world will be a little (or a lot) less refined.
If you are studying the mystical teachings of the Torah, engaged in daily prayer and meditation, careful about your interactions with the world and with others, it is fair to say that you will be more in tune with the Divine.
When we left Egypt we left the entrapment of Pharaoh and the inability to have our frequency tuned to G-dly perception. The journey between Egypt and Mt. Sinai (known as the period of the counting Omer) is a journey of integration. Each day of the counting we refine another element of our character allowing for finer tuning of Divine vision.
This takes work no doubt. Daily effort of study, prayer, meditation. However, the efforts pay off. In time, we become nicer people, kinder to ourselves and to those around us, engaged in meaningful and purposeful pursuits, making the world a more G-dly and goodly place.
If you change your reality your perception will change.
Have a good Shabbos!
