I love that I got your attention :-). A lecture by a local Rabbi entitled “How to atone for sins you intend to transgress again?” got me thinking.
Indeed, we’re right back where we were last year so what is going to change. And in fact, are there some behaviors we absolutely intend to continue right after the season is over or maybe squeeze it in during the season as well?
So here is my three point guide;1. Give it a chance. Don’t make a determination that you are absolutely going to engage in those behaviors again. Say these words, do it now, out loud; “maybe, just perhaps, I won’t engage in this (name it) behavior again”. Maybe, you will open up a small window of opportunity that will actually produce the breakthrough you’ve been hoping for.
2. The season is a detox of sorts. Imagine if we never had this season?! At least we are able to recalibrate and if indeed nothing changes as a result of the season, at least we stopped to revisit our purpose and our relationship with G-d and our being on this earth. So, don’t expect to see major change, just embrace the season as an opportunity to reconnect, revisit and rejuvenate.
Think of it like vacation. You fully expect to working the same hours you did before you went on vacation but you still go on vacation to recharge. This season allows us to recharge spiritually. Take the time to pray a little more, study a bit more Torah and enjoy the season with all it has to offer. Stop thinking about how it is going to change you and just be present for the journey.
3. Maybe let the season change one small thing in your life. Find one small negative behavior you want to stop or one positive you want to embrace. Don’t pick the one that belongs to #1 above. Find something else, something small, something that you know you are ready, are capable and are willing to change. Really small, but really do it.
If you come out the other end of this High Holiday season having changed one behavior, having spent some time recharging, it might actually be the best season ever.
